We live in a society where sneakers have become one of the biggest fashion trends of the century. Dress shoes, jeans, hats, and other apparel used to be the main items that were branded with popular emblems, custom labels, clothing labels, or sew labels. We even wore key chains to show off the popular brand name we were wearing, but in recent years the sneaker has become the way to showcase our favorite custom label. Our sneaker obsession has brought millions of dollars to companies like Nike, Skechers, and Adidas.

Nike is a billion dollar company that has not slowed down since its inception in 1972 by co-founder Bill Bowerman. Nike set out to provide a sneaker that would enhance the athletic prowess of all sports lovers. Throughout Nike’s years they have enhanced their company with custom labels, clothing labels, sew labels, and promotional products like key chains, in addition to their popular sneakers, all with their Nike emblem emblazoned across them, to embed the Nike emblem in all of our minds, making Nike a global phenomenon of the past 3 decades.

Skechers is the most recent sneaker to gain popularity in the last few years. Skechers won over teenagers all over the US, and is now making its move into the international market with subsidiaries in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, and a number of countries that have caught onto Skechers’ popularity. Skechers markets it’s shoe line through custom labels, clothing labels, emblems, and sew labels on bags, key chains, and even hats, but their sneakers are the buzz that keeps their company making billions of dollars a year.

Adidas is a brand that has been around even longer than Nike. We can trace Adidas back to 1949 when it was first registered as a company, named after the founder, Adolf Dassler. Adolf was trying to build a sneaker that would provide the best support and aid for an athlete. Most German athletes were wearing Dassler’s sneakers before Adidas was even registered as a company. Athletes knew Dassler’s sneakers even without the custom labels, emblems, clothing labels, or sew labels that are utilized today to promote; the athletes knew the shoe by word of mouth because of its quality and performance. Adidas was a global phenomenon long before most companies began to see globalization as a way to increase profits. Adidas’ custom label is known throughout the world and is the number one selling sneaker in the world today.

We have so many different custom labels proclaiming the names of so many different designers that we are expected to display on our daily outings, but no one could have predicted the unanticipated popularity of the sneaker. Dassler began the sneaker war with his custom label of Adidas for the athlete, and then came Nike to compete against Dassler’s old-fashioned athletic sneakers, and then Skechers came along and changed the game all together by making a popular sneaker for the average Joe. Now sneakers have become a part of all of our everyday lives, from the athlete to the business person; we all find use for our sneakers at some part of our day, whether for comfort, style, athletics, or just to show off our support for our favorite custom label sneaker.
